Back to school blues

I was hoping to avoid it this year. During the summer my wife (who teaches Ninth Grade English) and daughter have a great time together enjoying their days by our community swimming pool while I slave away at work. This nets me a little leeway in that I can raid more.
But now that they're both back to school, I try to cut back on raiding to help out around the house and with home work. While I was waiting for things to calm down and for all of us to get back into a rythm so I could hit a few more raids, my daughter came home in tears the other day. My wife asked what was wrong, and then we found out she's been getting in trouble at school for talking. Not to pester her classmates, but she's asking them for directions because she's not understanding what the teacher is saying. She was also placed in the second to lowest math group, which is causing some self-confidence issues along with a LOT of anxiety because she doesn't want to be teased for not being smart.
Like I said I was waiting for the 3 of us to get into a rythm so I could start attending raids more regularly, but it looks like that wont happen for awhile still. My wife and I are both committed to helping our daughter any way we can, including assisting with homework, tutors, practice, flashcards, anything. Which means, I hope to raid a little more regularly after we build our daughters self-confidence up and get her more comfortable with math (long division confuses her).
I'm not saying good-bye, not saying I'll be absent for the next month(s), but my playing time will be very sporatic (30 mins here, 45 mins there). My family are the most important people in my life, and I just can't fail my daughter.
So, I'll see you all when I'm on, and I'll be thinking about you all kicking tail when I'm not.

Those are signs of a good father/husband. The family is the most important thing we can have. We'll see you when you can sneak a little time away and log in. Take care and I hope the time spent with her nets wonderful results.

My daughter was diagnosed with ADD yesterday. The doctor thinks that this will be something that she will out grow in a few years as she learns to control impulses and focus when at school. He prescribed one of the ADD meds, I just hope it doesn't change her from being the lovely and wonderful daughter she really is.

Personally I am not a big fan of mood altering drugs on kids, parents did it to me and look how messed up I am...
When I was teaching years ago, had a kid with the same problems, they could hear but distractions were easily to come by, "White Noise"
Now I am no guru on the subjuect but there are focussing exercises for everyone, to train their mind rather than alter it.
Would talk to a hearing specialist see if they have suggestions.
Here is a link for focussing exercises

I agree Sit. I used to work for one of the world large pharmacuetical companies. It was very bittersweet knowing that our medication was helping some, but being abused by others and forced one the rest when they didn't want it (or worse - when they didn't NEED it).
I think the biggest travesty in America is the over medicating of our children, and it's primarily to make their parents lives easier.
I'd take my daughter off the meds, but SHE thinks it's helping.

About 32 years ago, back in high school. a doctor put me on some medication. I dont remember the name of it, but it only got me depressed more then normal, near the point of no return. I stopped using it. I got better.

Hey Durd,
First off thanks for sharing. You are doing the right things. The MOST important thing you are doing is showing her that you care about her just the way she is, and giving love, support and encouragement REGARDless of the outcome. Trust me, teaching our children never ends!
Best Wishes for her

Consider a placebo? It may be helping because she
thinks it is.

It's been an interesting week. Earlier this week, my daughter asked to go to the restroom. When she didn't return to class the teacher sent someone to checkup on her. Apparently my daughter met a friend in the girls restroom and they both decided that they weren't going back to class - which she told the student that the teacher sent.
Then the two girls (my daughter and her friend) roamed the halls until they were caught by a second grade teacher, who promptly escorted them back to their respective classes.
My wife and I are still having a hard time understanding where this behavior is coming from.

Is she having trouble getting teased or bullied by other kids? Might ask around to see if there are some nasty personality conflicts going on.

No, she's very easy-going, and doesn't seem to have an enemy in the world. She gets along with just most everyone. Now I will admit, she's easily influenced by others - which my wife and I see as a big problem. We're working on her to stand up to friends when they want her to join them in doing something she knows is wrong (the girl a few houses down is a particularly bad influence).
To add on top of this, we JUST got her first report card - she got an A- for behavior.
I was expecting a C or worse, I can't wait for our parent-teacher conference tomorrow morning.

We don't worry so much about our daughter as she's a pretty good kid. We worry more about the other ones that try to get her to do stupid stuff she shouldn't be doing so I know where you're coming from here.

Sorry to get in on this late, but you're definitely making the right decision, family comes first. We'll look for ya those times you can sneak in, but be a good husband and father first. I'm no psychologist or even a parent, so I have no idea what to do
but I'm sure you'll figure it out, good luck to ya.
